General Conference Experiment

Usually, since we've had kids, we watch conference and listen to it while our kids are running around doing the usual things kids do, or we've taken turns going to the church to listen to it and left the kiddos behind with the other adult so we can pay more attention.
This year, since we're in a place where it is televised (go Tri-Cities!) we decided to actually get our kids to listen to it this time.
We prepared last week with an FHE lesson on prophets and then told them that we get to listen to our prophet on TV soon.
When the time came I had a bunch of supplies. We had a chart of all the General Authorities and Auxillary Presidencies so that they could find the speaker on the chart and put a star sticker on them. We had the usual General Conference Bingo and lots of yummy treats and candy. We also had a coloring page of Pres. Monson, a Conference booklet with all the 1st Pres. and the 12 and a space to write what they were talking about (our kids don't write, but they drew a picture of what they talked about and Easton's illustrations were pretty good!). And we also had a fun game of Memory using the pictures of the First Pres. and 12 Apostles.
It was a pretty good experiment and turned out to be quite successful. Our kids will be even more prepared for the next Conference and for all the ones in years to come. Hopefully, someday they'll be able to get a whole lot more out of conference and apply it to thier own lives, but for now I'll be happy that they are at least quiet, in the room, and sort of paying attention to what is being said.

You are so amazing. I thought about trying to get my kids to listen ... for about five seconds. And then I decided that yet another year of the ignore-kids-while-they-destroy-everything method wouldn't kill anyone. Maybe next time. I'll have to remember what you did and try it!

Lindsey: You are a mom after my own heart. Thanks for being so dedicated to training the boys up in the way they should go even though it is not always easy!
